As long-time supporters of Hospice Halifax, we are very pleased to see the dream of a standalone hospice get closer to reality. October of 2017 marked a milestone as construction began for the new 10-bed facility designed to provide a homelike environment for terminally ill patients and their families.

Getting to this point took years of planning and fundraising by a group of dedicated volunteers who saw the need for a place for those with a terminal illness to live out their final days in a warm and caring environment.

The hospice will provide an alternative to dying at home where family members often take on the bulk of the burden of providing personal and medical care, instead of being able to just spend time with their dying loved one. And like a hospital, it offers round-the-clock medical attention, but does so in a home-like environment where there are supports for both the patient and their family.

The hospice is free of charge to patients, with funding for the facility and the medical care provided by Hospice Halifax and the Nova Scotia Health Authority. Providing a space for patients to live their final days outside of hospital is not only more comfortable, it’s also more cost-effective – $475/day compared to $800 – $1200/day in a hospital.

Hospice Halifax is still raising the funds for the construction and operation of the facility, which is expected to welcome its first guests before the end of 2018. We are honoured to continue our support of Hospice Halifax, and congratulate them on their heroic efforts to bring this much-needed facility to Halifax.
