I am Potential

There are a few tough years between elementary and high school. And if kids don’t have access to support or role models, they can start to lose their way. I am Potential tackles this issue head-on with a program that connects students to university, new career options and positive adult role models.

I am Potential was developed by Kevin Jolly, the man behind the Start2Finish program at St. Joseph A. McKay Elementary School for the last seven years. The new program picks up where Start2Finish ends, and keeps up the momentum by providing unique experiences for at-risk students in grades 7-9.

At the centre of the program is hands-on learning in a university environment. In its inaugural year, youth built wooden samurai swords using hand tools donated by Lee Valley Tools at a space provided by the Engineering faculty at Dalhousie University. Future projects will involve Lego-robotics, theatre and medicine with university student volunteers.
